titleOfInvention Process and apparatus for treating tobacco
abstract 1426121 Reconstituted tobacco TAMAG BASEL AG 11 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 27660/73 Heading A2C Tobacco flakes are made from coarsely comminuted tobacco material by moistening the latter while simultaneously mixing and kneading to form a dough-like mass, shaping portions of the mass, applying the shaped portions to a transport belt, and spreading the portions under a pressure of not more than approximately 20 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> to form individual flakes using a spreader belt moving in the same direction as but at a different speed from the transport belt. Moistening may be effected by use of a liquid containing an alkali and/or a silicic acid sol at 30-70‹C. As shown moistened and softened tobacco material is transported from silo 4 directly into a continuously operating kneader 5, additives such as binders, burn promoters and softeners being supplied by reservoirs 6a, 6b, 6c. Emerging from kneader 5 as portions or clumps the tobacco is fed to a transport belt 7 and is acted upon by spreader belt 7' running at a slightly lower speed than belt 7.
