abstract 1425561 Fluorinated nitroxides and heterocyclics DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 31 Jan 1973 [31 Jan 1972] 4382/72 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds having the structural unit which may be linear as shown or a ring structure in which the terminal N and O atoms are directly linked, and wherein R F <SP>1</SP> is a divalent polyfluoroalkylene group having a chain of 1-4 C atoms and is optionally substituted at one or more positions with a Cl atom, polyfluoroalkyl, chlorofluoroalkyl or polyfluorocycloalkyl groups containing up to 6 C atoms and R F is a monovalent straight or branched chain, or cyclic, polyfluoroalkyl group of up to 10 C atoms or a chlorofluoroalkyl group of up to 10 C atoms and the R F groups are the same or different or if the compound is not an N/O ring compound the R F groups may be interconnected to form a cyclic structure wherein the two R F groups represent a divalent polyfluoroalkylene group of 1-4 C chain length optionally substituted at one or more positions by a Cl-atom, polyfluoroalkyl, chlorofluoroalkyl or polyfluorocycloalkyl group of up to 6 C atoms. Compounds of general formula are prepared by reacting substantially equivalent proportions of CF 2 =CFQ F and PCl 3 with 2 equivalent proportions of 1 or 2 polyfluoronitrosoalkanes P F NO to form an adduct, where P F is a monovalent straight or branched, or cyclic polyfluoroalkyl group of up to 10 C atoms or a chlorofluoroalkyl group of up to 10 C atoms and Q F is Cl, F or a straight or branched or cyclic polyfluoroalkyl group of up to 6 C atoms or a chlorofluoroalkyl group of up to 6 C atoms, hydrolysing the adduct to form a hydroxylamine of formula and subsequently oxidizing to produce the desired bis-nitroxide. Compounds of general formula are prepared by treating a bis-nitroxide of general formula with a polyfluoronitrosoalkane P F NO. Compounds of general formula are obtained by fluorinating the unfluorinated or partially fluorinated compound wherein R<SP>1</SP> is the unfluorinated or partially fluorinated equivalent of R<SP>1</SP> F and photolysing the fluorinated product in the presence of O 2 and/or silica. Amongst the examples the products perfluoro - (2,5 - dioxyl - 2,5 - diazahexane), perfluoro - (2,5 - dimethyl - 1 - oxa- 2,5 - diazacyclopentane) and of the formulĀµ and are prepared. The compounds are useful as cross-linking agents for polyfluoropolymers including nitrosorubbers.
