abstract | 1424587 Copolymers UNION OPTICS CORP 27 Feb 1973 9597/73 Heading C3P A cross-linked, water-insoluble copolymer from which hydrogels for use as contact lenses may be prepared is obtained by bulk polymerization of a mixture of a water soluble polymerizable monoester of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, and a glycidyl acrylate and/or methacrylate and/or crotonate. The polymerization is carried out using a free radical catalyst and if desired an accelerator to promote reaction by opening of the epoxy ring. In examples copolymers of hydroxy ethyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate are prepared in moulds using t-butyl peroctoate as catalyst. The contact lens blanks produced are machined and then swelled in saline solution to produce contact lenses. |
