titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of foam polyamide
abstract 1423720 Foamed polyamides BRIDGESTONE TIRE CO Ltd 25 April 1973 [27 April 1972 (2)] 19678/73 Heading C3C A polyamide foam is made by the ring- opening polymerization of a lactam in the presence of a boric catalyst, a promoter and a foaming agent by (A) preparing a mixture of the lactam and the catalyst at a temperature above the m.p. of the lactam, (B) preparing a flowable mixture of the promoter and the foaming agent at room temperature (i.e. 20- 40‹ C.) at least one of these materials being a liquid at room temperature, (C) mixing A and B at a temperature above the m.p. of the lactam with vigorous agitation in a mixing vessel to initiate polymerization and (D) discharging the polymerization mixture into a mould before more than 10% of the lactam has been polymerized to the polyamide and allowing the polymerization to be completed. In the examples mixtures of (A) #-caprolactam with sodium caprolactam (as catalyst) and (B) hexamethylene diisocyanate, benzoyl chloride and/or acetyl caprolactam (as promoters), toluene and/or hexane (as foaming agents), a silicone oil (as foam stabilizer) and optionally #- caprolactam, were continuously mixed together and then discharged on to a moulding surface to form foams.
