The compounds have the formula wherein R is halogen, hydrocarbyl, -NR<SP>111</SP> 2 -OR<SP>111</SP> or a heterocyclic group, R<SP>111</SP> is a hydrocarbyl group, each E is -O-, -S-, or -NR<SP>111</SP>, G is -OR<SP>111</SP>, -SR<SP>111</SP>, -NR<SP>111</SP> 2 , -PR<SP>111</SP> 2 , or a heterocyclic ring system, Q is oxygen or sulphur, Z is a bivalent hydrocarbyl radical and n is 1, 2 or 3. The compounds are obtained by reaction of a compound H(E-Z-G) or a salt thereof with a compound R 3 P(Q). Examples of these procedures are given to prepare the following specific compounds (1) [(CH 3 ) 2 N] 2 P(O)N(CH 3 )CH 2 CH 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 (2) (CH 3 ) 2 NP(O)[N(CH 3 )CH 2 CH 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 ] 2 (3) [(CH 3 ) 2 N] 2 P(O)OCH 2 CH 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 (4) (CH 3 ) 2 NP(O)[OCH 2 CH 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 ] 2 .
