| abstract | 1422885 Coating plastics with metals MACDERMID Inc 21 Nov 1973 [23 March 1973] 53926/73 Heading C7F A plastics, e.g. epoxy resin, substrate is bonded by heat and pressure to an oxidized metal foil, e.g. anodized Al, the foil being then chemically stripped and the stripped surface coated with a permanent metal layer, e.g. by electroless or vacuum deposition,the stripped substrate being contacted with a solution of an organic silane before or during application of the permanent coating. The oxidized foil may be stripped with HCl or NaOH, the substrate being then washed in H 3 PO 4 , sensitized with Pd-SnCl 2 hydrosol, immersed in HBF 4 and electroless plated with Cu, Ni or Co. The Si compound may be applied separately in an aqueous or organic solution before or after activation or may be included in the HBF 4 or electroless bath. Alternatively the stripped substrate may be vacuum coated. Specified silanes are; vinyl-tris (#-methoxy ethoxy) silane, γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane, γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethyl silane, γ-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane and N-(#-aminoethyl)-γ-amino propyl trimethoxy silane. |
