titleOfInvention | Alkali metal leak detection method and apparatus |
abstract | 1421545 Alkali metal leak detection VARIAN ASSOCIATES 15 Dec 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 58118/72 Heading G1S Sodium metal leaking from the coolant system of a nuclear reactor encounters a probe comprising a metal cylinder 7, Fig. 2, having a hydrogen permeable diaphragm 8 tight sealed in the end thereof and communicating with a sputter ion pump 3 operating an alarm device. A heater 9 is provided to run the diaphragm hot and truely reflect the concentration of H outside the probe, and a thermocouple 15 controls the heater via a power supply P.S and signal receiver S.R. The diaphragm may be of palladium, iron, nickel, titanium, zirconium, columbium or yttrium. The H is produced when the sodium reacts with a coating over its container or with a water vapour laden air surrounding the container, the coating having H which is replaceable by the sodium. Examples of such coatings include inorganic hydroxides, viz barium hydroxide, many clays (including silicates and oxides), mica, asbestos, or alcohols and phenols. In Fig. 3 the alkali (sodium) metal containing pipe 1 is surrounded by a porous filling 27 of metal turnings coated with barium hydroxide, and the heater 9 is omitted. If the system is such that the temperature of the metal will vary, then the temperature signal transmitted from 18 is analyzed by a compensator 29 which generates a correction of the pressure signal from 3. If the surrounding atmosphere is likely to contain hydrogen, then the coating could contain a hydrogen isotope e.g. barium deuteroxide detectable by connecting the pump 3 to a mass spectrometer. |
