titleOfInvention | Process for the selective removal of sulphur impurities from effluent gases |
abstract | 1420263 Removing sulphur oxides by absorption UNION CARBIDE CORP 6 March 1973 [7 March 1972 12 Jan 1973] 10949/73 Heading B1L Sulphur dioxide is removed from gas mixtures containing it by countercurrent absorption at below 100‹C in an aqueous solvent comprising 50 to 95 percent of either where R 1 R 2 and R 3 is alkylene C 2-4 and a b and c are integers of value 1 to 5 or wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is alkylene C 2-4 , R 5 is alkylene C 1-6 and a b c and d are integers from 1 to 5. The sulphite of the "trialkanolamine" may also be used. The absorbed sulphur dioxide is stripped from the solvent fed at under 115‹C to a stripping tower in which the lean bottoms solvent is kept below 125‹C and recycled to the absorber having been made up to an appropriate water/alkanolic composition. The solvent is also selective for sulphur trioxide but this is removed from the used absorbent by precipitation as sulphite using potassium ions. The sulphur dioxide usually occurs in gas mixtures from fossil fuels and is present with SO 3 and carbon dioxide. It may occur with nitrogen oxides in which case they are removed also by precipitation with potassium. Thus a proportion of the lean bottoms is treated in each cycle to remove SO 3 and nitrogen oxides if they are present. |
