1419481 Dithiole derivatives CIBA-GEIGY AG 18 June 1974 [20 June 1973] 29334/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises compounds of formula in which R and R<SP>1</SP> are the same or different and each is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms which may be substituted with alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an aralkyl radical having from 7 to 14 carbon atoms, and Y is hydrogen or SR<SP>2</SP> where R<SP>2</SP> is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms, alkenyl having from 3 to 20 carbon atoms, or aralkyl having from 7 to 14 carbon atoms. They are used as extreme pressure additives and antioxidants for lubricants and as stabilizers for rubbers. Compounds in which Y is hydrogen are prepared by reacting an alkylated phenol. with sulphur in a refluxing inert catalyst in the presence of a basic catalyst. The compounds in which Y is SR<SP>2</SP> are made by alkylation of compounds wherein Y = SH with R<SP>2</SP>Hal in ethanolic NaOH. Alkylated phenols of Formula II in which R = R<SP>1</SP> = t-amyl-; 1-methylcyclohexyl-; 1,1-dimethylbutyl-; and 1,1-dimethylbenzyl are prepared by reacting p-isopropylphenol with t-amyl alcohol, 1-methylcyclohexanol, propylene dimer and α-methylstyrene respectively under acidic conditions. The compound of Formula I in which R = R<SP>1</SP> = t-butyl and Y=SH is prepared by the action of sodium disulphide in dimethylformamide on the corresponding compound in which Y=H. |
