titleOfInvention Methyl-pentenyl sulphones
abstract 1419432 Methyl-pentenyl sulphones RHONEPOULENC SA 17 April 1973 [18 April 1972] 18377/73 Heading C2C Sulphones of the general formula in which one of the symbols Y and Y 1 represents a hydrogen atom and the other symbol represents a methyl radical; each of R and R 1 , which are the same or different, represents a radical of formula -CHO, -COR 2 , -COOH, -COOR 3 , -CONR 5 R 5 , -CN, -SO 2 R 4 , -SO 3 R 5 and -NO 2 , wherein each of R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 represents aralkyl or aryl radical and R 5 can also represent a hydrogen atom, Q represents an alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkylaryl radical or a saturated or unsaturated terpene radical containing 5n carbon atoms, n being an integer of 1 to 9, which is substituted or unsubstituted, with the proviso that Q does not represent a 3-methyl butadienyl, 2-methylbutadienyl or 2-butadienylmethyl radical, are claimed per se. The compounds are prepared by reacting a sulphone of the formula or where X is halogen atom with a methylene compound of formula R-CH 2 -R 1 in the presence of a basic agent. Preferably the basic agent is an alkali metal alcoholate of an alkanol of 1 to 6 atoms or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide.
