titleOfInvention Methods and compositions for dispersing oil films
abstract 1418374 Oil dispersal USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 6 Nov 1973 [13 Nov 1972] 51525/73 Heading C1C A composition for dispersing oil films on water comprises a solution of 3-50 wt. per cent of a non-ionic surfactant in 50-97 wt. per cent of water-insoluble oxygenated organic compounds selected from (i) mixtures comprising 65-95 wt. per cent of mixed C 4 -C 13 alcohols and 5-35 wt. per cent of esters of said alcohols (e.g. with adipic, sebacic or phthalic acid), (ii) oxo bottoms obtained from the production of C 6 -C 13 oxo-alcohols, and (iii) mixtures of (i) and (ii). The non-ionic surfactant may be an alkanolamine/fatty acid condensate, an ethylene glycol ether, a polyalkylene glycol ether, or a polycarboxylic acid ester. The composition may be poured into or sprayed on to the polluted water (e.g. of a river) or a stream feeding it, or added to an effluent stream containing oil and water which discharges into a larger body of water. The oil may be a petroleum, vegetable or coal tar oil in a concn. of up to 100 p.p.m.
