titleOfInvention Curable water-soluble compositions
abstract 1417405 Curable acrylamide compositions LUBRIZOL CORP 8 Dec 1972 [15 March 1972 20 Dec 1971] 56789/72 Headings C3P and C3R A curable composition comprises (A) at least one thermosetting acrylic polymer or aminoplast composition and (B) a water-soluble substance prepared by reacting, in the presence of an alkaline reagent, an aliphatic aldehyde containing not more than 4 carbon atoms, or a reversible polymer thereof with a substituted acrylamide of the formula wherein each R<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>7</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> is hydrogen, or a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical with the proviso that group (R<SP>9</SP>) 3 C may be an aryl group, at least one R<SP>9</SP> being hydrogen and R<SP>8</SP> is hydrogen, halogen or a C 1 -C 7 alkyl radical or substituted C 1 -C 7 alkyl radical said reaction being effected in a diluent comprising (1) water and/or (2) an organic solvent for the reactants and/or product. The reaction product (B) may be a mixture of monomers dimers and trimers. The composition may contain a free radical polymerization catalyst, a filler and/or pigments and may contain the unreacted acrylamide. In the examples diacetone acrylamide is reacted with formaldehyde acetaldehyde, or n-butraldehyde or paraformaldehyde in water or methanol or diacetophenone acrylamide is reacted with formaldehyde in methanol and an aqueous solution of this product is combined with (a) a thermosetting acrylic latex, a thermosetting interpolymer of butylacrylate, ethylacrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid and N-methylolacrylamide, or a melamine formaldehyde resin and (b) t-butylperbenzoate or titanium dioxide together with allylthiourea, surfactants, an antifoam agent and cumene hydroperoxide. The compositions can be applied to paper or steel panels.
