titleOfInvention Manufacture of impact-resistant acrylonitrile-styrene copolymers
abstract 1415084 Uniform copolymers STANDARD OIL CO 24 April 1973 [10 May 1972] 19381/73 Heading C3P A polymeric resin is prepared by polymerizing in a homogeneous manner, by maintaining an essentially constant acrylonitrile-styrene ratio in the polymerization medium and always maintaining some free styrene in the medium until most of the monomers are converted to polymer, to form a uniform copolymer to at least 70% by weight conversion of 100 parts by weight of a monomer component consisting of (A) from 70 to 98% by weight of acrylonitrile, based on the weight of (A) and (B), and (B) from 2 to 30% by weight, based on the combined weights of (A) plus (B), of styrene and then including in the polymerization medium from 1 to 40 parts by weight of (C), from 70 to 100% by weight of butadiene-1,3 and/or isoprene, based on the weight of (C) and (D), and (D) from 0 to 30% by weight, based on the combined weights of (C) plus (D), of acrylonitrile and/or styrene and continuing the polymerization to a final conversion of from 80 to 100% by weight of monomers to polymer. The term "uniform copolymer" refers one in which the average composition of a polymer molecule formed early in the polymerization reaction is substantially the same as one formed at any later period. In the examples acrylonitrile, styrene and butadiene-1,3 are copolymerized in the presence of water, ammonium salt of sulphated nonylphenoxy poly(ethyleneoxy) ethanol, (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 and limonene dimercaptan.
