titleOfInvention Artificial skin
abstract 1412489 Laminates NATIONAL PATENT DEVELOPMENT CORP 22 Feb 1973 [7 April 1972] 8862/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] An artificial skin comprises a relatively thick water-containing hydrophilic polymer sponge layer and, on one side of the sponge layer, a relatively thin film layer of a non-hydrophilic moisture vapour permeable, oxygen and carbon dioxide permeable polymer. Preferred thicknesses and permeabilities are given. The polymer sponge may be a polymer of hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylates, hydroxy alkoxy alkyl (meth)acrylates, vinyl pyrrolidone, acrylamide, alkyl acrylamide, N-hydroxy alkyl (meth)- acrylamide or polyvinyl alcohol or mixtures thereof. The sponge is made by applying a solution between glass plates, and allowing the solution to harden. The sponge may be reinforced by a fibrous mesh which is incorporated during moulding, the mesh being made of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate or poly(cyclohexane dimethylene terephthalate), polytetrafluoroethylene, glass or nylon. The film layer may be likewise reinforced. The film layer may be made of polymers of vinyl acetate, silicone polymers (e.g. polydimethylsiloxane), polybutylene, polyisoprene, polybutadiene, microporous polyethylene, microporous polypropylene, polymer of alkoxy (meth)acrylates, alkyl (meth)- acrylates, mixtures of these, or copolymers of alkyl and alkoxy (meth)acrylates. Alkoxy alkyl (meth)acrylates may be copolymerized with 0À1 to 50 vol. per cent of vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl chloride, styrene, α-methyl styrene, or alkyl (meth)acrylates. The film may be applied as a solution by casting, spraying or brushing or the film may be adhered by an adhesive (e.g. acrylic). Alternatively the sponge can be formed on the surface of the film.
