abstract 1410585 Indole LONZA Ltd 19 Aug 1974 [12 Sept 1973] 36371/74 Heading C2C Indole is prepared by heating o-ethylaniline and/or o-aminostyrene, without the addition of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas, in the presence of a water vapour and of a catalyst which contains at least one alkali metal compound and/or alkaline earth metal compound and at least one oxide and/or salt of iron, cobalt, chromium, vanadium, titanium, zinc, copper and zirconium. If o-ethylaniline is used as starting material any o-aminostyrene formed may be separated off with unreacted o-ethyl aniline and returned to the reaction mixture.
