titleOfInvention Tank construction
abstract 1410272 Gas storage containers MARTIN MARIETTA ALUMINUM Inc 5 Jan 1973 [7 Jan 1972] 698/73 Heading F4P [Also in Division B3] A method of making a stationary cylindrical tank comprises forming a bottom 13, bulding up from the bottom a series of vertical shells 11, inserting strips of a connector seal 12 in horizontal joints between adjacent shells, the seals comprising a metal strip having outer and inner sleeve sections 15, 16, joined by a neck section 17, the section 16 comprising upper and lower flanges 18, 19 one of which at least is flexible and curved, and welding the flexible and curved flange to the inner wall of one of the shells, thereby forming a pocket 24 or 25, and welding the other flange to an adjacent shell. A series of abutting connector seals may be used around the circumference of the tank and 0-rings 22, 23 or a caulking compound are disposed in the pockets 24, 25. The upper shells 11 are prevented from lifting under internal pressure by bolts 28 secured to bracket arms 26, 27, which are welded to adjacent shells. A number of brackets are provided around the periphery of the tank. An S- shaped seal 47 is welded to the bottom 13 and the lowermost shell allowing movement of the shell up to a safety stop 40. A seal (41), Fig. 5 (not shown), of semicircular cross-section may alternatively be fitted. The seals between the vertical shells may be formed with one flexible leg (34) only, Fig. 4 (not shown), forming a single pocket (37), which contains an O-ring or caulking compound. The connector seals are made of the same material as the tank components, e.g. steel or aluminium.
