titleOfInvention Water-soluble cationic polymeric materials and their use
abstract 1409229 Polyamines BETZ LABORATORIES Inc 8 May 1974 20212/74 Heading C3R A water-soluble cationic polymer is obtained by the polymerization in an aqueous medium of an epihalohydrin with an alkylene polyamine having the general, formula: wherein R is an alkylene group having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each an alkyl group of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, the mole ratio of epihalohydrin to polyamine being from 0À60 1 to 2À7 : 1, said polymerization comprising reacting with the alkylene polyamine from 50 to 90% of the amount of epihalohydrin to be polymerized, allowing the reaction to continue until the reaction medium attains a substantially uniform viscosity, and reacting the remaining portion of the epihalohydrin incrementally to obtain the cationic polymer, the temperature of polymerization being from 60‹ to 120‹ C. The polymers may be used alone and mixed with ferric salts, bentonite, clay, alum and/or polyaluminium chloride compounds as coagulant aids, to flocculate aqueous suspensions. In examples polymers are obtained by reacting epichlorhydrin with N,N-dimethyl-1,3- propane dimaine and are used to clarify turbid waters.
