abstract 1408857 Glycolaldehyde AJINOMOTO CO Inc 11 June 1974 [12 June 1973] 25935/74 Heading C2C Glycolaldehyde is prepared by reacting formaldehyde with CO and H 2 in the presence of a cobalt-containing catalyst. The formaldehyde may be used as such or in polymeric form. A polar solvent or a non-polar solvent containing a polar solute is preferably used. Suitable polar solvents include ketones, nitriles, carboxylic acids, amides, ureas, alcohols, water and ethylene carbonate and polar solutes used with for example, benzene include dinitriles and amides.
