titleOfInvention Method of manufacturing loose-fibres sheets a binder therefor and end products thus obtained
abstract 1408621 Compositions for binding fibres COMPAGNIE ROUSSELOT 28 Sept 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 44742/72 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A storage stable binder composition for use in binding fibres to form non-woven sheets comprises (A) a random or block copolymer containing 1-20% by weight of units of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer having one or more hydroxyl, amine, amide, carbonyl, ether, carboxylic acid or epoxy groups, and 80- 99% by weight of units of one or more other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, the copolymer being insoluble in water and used in the form of an aqueous dispersion; and 1 to 100% by wt. with respect to copolymer A of (B) an aminoplast or phenoplast condensation product of an amine, amide or a phenol with an aldehyde, the product being partly or wholly etherified with a C 4 -C 20 aliphatic alcohol and being insoluble in water, and used in the form of an aqueous dispersion; the aqueous dispersions of A and B having been mixed at room temperature and the pH of the mixture having been adjusted to from 7À0 to 7À2, the storage stable composition thus obtained being free of any water-soluble aminoplast. The presence of a cross-linking agent is not usually necessary but, if desired, such an agent (e.g. ammonium chloride, zinc acetate or oxalic acid) may be added to the composition just before use. Other optional components include fillers, dyestuffs, surfactants and polyvinyl alcohol. In examples the copolymer A is a random copolymer of styrene/ n-butyl acrylate/ethylene glycol monomethacrylate/methacrylic acid; ethyl acrylate/N- methylolacrylamide/acrylic acid; or vinyl acetate/crotonic acid, and the condensate B is a melamine-formaldehyde resin etherified with n-butanol or isobutanol; a urea-formaldehyde resin etherified with n-butanol; or a phenolformaldehyde resin etherified with n-butanol.
