titleOfInvention Resin compositions
abstract 1407921 Epoxy resins COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 1 Feb 1974 [1 Feb 1973 4 Jan 1974] 5026/73 and 00398/74 Heading C3B A resin composition comprises an epoxide resin, a toluene-formaldehyde resin, preferably in an amount of 2-500 p.b.w. per 100 p.b.w. of epoxide resin, formed by the condensation of aromatic hydrocarbons containing at least 70% wt. toluene with formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor, and an amine curing agent having at least 2 primary or secondary amino groups and a molecular weight of less than 1500. The epoxide resin preferably has 1À8-2À3 oxirane rings per molecule and a molecular weight of less than 500. Suitable epoxides are the diglycidyl ether of 2,2<SP>1</SP>-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)- propane or of the bisphenol prepared by reacting phenol and divinyl benzene; bis-(N-glycidyl-4- aminophenyl) methane; reaction products of glycidol and aliphatic or aromatic primary diamines; glycidyl esters; aliphatic diepoxides and epoxidized polybutadiene. Suitable amines include diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, N-(2-hydroxyethyl) diethylene triamine, dicyandiamide, 1,3-diaminobenzene, N-aminoethylpiperazine, bis-(4-aminophenyl) methane, diaminoisophorone, bis - (4 - amino - 3 - methylcyclohexyl) methane, bis - (4 - aminophenyl)- sulphone, and the reaction products of diethylene triamine and triethylene tetramine with any one of the following:-Diels-Alder dimers and trimers of mixed linoleic acids, acrylonitrile, di-glycidyl ethers of bisphenols. The amine preferably has a polarity of above 0À2 and less than 1, the polarity being the ratio of the relative atomic proportions of N and O atoms to C atoms. The oxygen content of the toluene-HCHO resin is preferably from 1-15% wt. The compositions can be used as surface coatings, adhesives and floorings and may be of the 2-component type in which the amine and toluene-HCHO resin forms one component and the epoxide resin the second component.
