1407827 Unsaturated hydrolysable silane copolymerization WACKER-CHEMIE GmbH 31 Aug 1972 [28 Sept 1971 (3)] 40414/72 Headings C3P and C3N A copolymer comprising a vinyl ester, an acrylate or methacrylate, or a styrene-butadiene mixture and 0À3 to 5% of units containing silanol groups and derived from a monomer of formula R 1 Si(OR 2 ) 3 where R 1 is an omegaethylenically unsaturated radical and each R 2 is independently a primary or secondary alkyl or acyl radical, which may be alkoxy substituted, or at most two of the R 2 may be hydrogen, is obtained by copolymerizing the above monomers in the aqueous phase, in the presence of a freeradical catalyst and an emulsifier and/or protective colloid, at - 15‹ to +100‹ C., and in which the silane is metered in during the course of the polymerization. In the examples copolymerization of vinyl acetate and tri-(methoxymethoxy)- vinyl silane or di-(methoxymethoxy)vinyl silane, vinyl acetate, 2-ethyl hexoic acid vinyl ester, acrylic acid, acrylamide and tri-(methoxymethoxy)vinyl silane, vinyl propionate, vinyl sulphonate, and trimethoxy allyl silane, vinylacetate, butyl acrylate, acrylic acid and trimethoxy allyl silane, and of vinyl acetate, ethylene and triethoxy vinyl silane or tri-(methoxymethoxy) vinyl silane is described, using the usual initiators and emulsifiers, and using the metering technique which yields the silanol groups by hydrolysis during the copolymerization. The polymers containing silanol groups may be used for preparing structural adhesive compositions (with filler and water), emulsion paints (with filler, pigment and water) and plaster compositions (with binder, coarse filler and water), e.g. a mixture of mica, dolomite, nitrile, quartz powder and sand, sodium hexameta phosphate, an organomercury fungicide, antifoaming agent, methyl cellulose and one of the aqueous dispersions containing the polymer with silanol groups (Examples 14 and 15). |
