titleOfInvention Friction materials
abstract 1405883 Friction materials BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 17 Oct 1972 [30 Sept 1971] 45559/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division B5] A friction element or friction member comprising a thermoset unsaturated polyester resin based moulding compound containing sufficient finely divided graphite to prevent binding in the clutch or brake mechanism. The moulding compound is a composition containing an unsaturated polyester, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable therewith and a peroxidic catalyst together with sufficient inert mineral filler to give the composition a mouldable consistency, which composition is capable of being thermoset at elevated temperatures and pressures to give a solid, infusible mass. Part of the inert mineral filler may be replaced by a fibrous filler. In the example a composition comprising an unsaturated polyester made from isophthalic acid, maleic anhydride and propylene glycol, styrene, calcium carbonate, hydrated alumina, antimony oxide, dropped glass fibres, graphite powder, polypropylene adipate, polyethylene powder, tertiary butyl peroctoate, zinc stearate, butylated hydroxy toluene and gamma methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane is moulded in a matched metal mould.
