titleOfInvention Additives for powder resins
abstract 1404458 Polymer blend powder coatings BAYER AG 19 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 58488/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates such as pipes, wire netting and forestry and agricultural tools are coated with a powder coating composition comprises a resin or resin mixture containing polymerised units of at least 35 wt. % of a mixture of styrene and one or more acrylic compounds, together with from 0.1-5 wt. %, based on the whole mixture, or a solvent free copolymer haying an average molecular weight of from 1000 to 10000 and a viscosity of from 1-1000 poises at 100‹C comprising copolymerised units of: (1) 1-20 parts by wt. of an alpha, betamono-olefinically unsaturated C 3-5 carboxylic acid; (2) 0-50 parts by wt. of a C 1-4 alcohol ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and (3) 30-99 parts by wt. of a C 5-20 alcohol ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, the sum of the parts by wt. being 100. The preferred styrene copolymer contains units of (A) 25-60 wt. % styrene, (B) 10-70 wt. % of at least one ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and (C) 5-30 wt. % of at least one other monomer selected from a C 2-8 hydroxyalkyl ester of a C 3-5 alpha beta unsaturated carboxylic acid, (meth)acrylamide, an N-methanol amide or C 1-4 alkyl ether thereof, of acrylic or methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid, itaconic acid, crotonic acid, glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate, 2-phenyl allyl alcohol, hydroxymethylnorbornene or a reaction product of a hydroxy group containing monomer with an alkoxymethylisocyanate. The composition may also comprises 1-50 wt. % based on the second polymer, of at least one methylolated urea or melamine resin, polycarboxylic acid, polyalcohol, polyisocyanate, blocked polyisocyanate, polyepoxide, polycarboxylic acid anhydride, polyamide, polyamine, polyoxazoline or polydihydroxyazine as external crosslinking agent, and also fillers and other processing aids. The powder is electrostatically sprayed onto substrates such as iron sheets, vehicle bodies, fascade panels, and forestry and agricultural tools, and levelled and cured by baking.
