1402030 Dimethyldecalins TEIJIN Ltd 1 Nov 1972 [2 Nov 1971 8 Nov 1971] 50409/72 Heading C5E Dimethyldecalins are prepared by (a) alkylating decalin (at least partly in the cis form) with ethylene at - 50‹ to + 50‹ C. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and (b) isomerizing the resultant ethylated decalin at -20‹ to + 80‹ C. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst but in the absence of ethylene. Suitable catalysts are AlCl 3 , AlBr 3 , BF 3 , SbCl 5 or a mixture of any of these with a hydrogen halide. 2,6- Dimethyldecalin may be recovered from the reaction mixture by crystallization. The starting decalin may be obtained by hydrogenating naphthalene over Pt, Pd, Ni, Ir, Ru or Rh as catalyst. |
