titleOfInvention Process and composition for the manufacture of fire- resistant pulp mouldings
abstract 1401960 Fire-resistant board BORDEN (UK) Ltd 7 Sept 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 42215/71 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] A fire-resistant pulp moulding is obtained by adding to the pulp at the beater stage a phenolic resin binder, a solid, pulverulent chlorine-containing polymer and a nitrogen- and/ or antimony-containing compound to provide 1-30 parts of halogen and 2.5-20 parts of nitrogen and/or 2.1-2 parts of antimony per 100 parts by weight, of the composition optionally with a phosphorus- or boron-containing compound and filtering, drying and moulding the pulp. The polymer is preferably formed from vinyl or vinylidene chloride. Suitable nitrogen compounds are urea-formaldehyde, dicyandiamide-formaldehyde, melamine - formaldehyde, ammonia catalysed phenol-formaldehyde or aniline-formaldehyde resin Goldschmidt's compound, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene imine, dicyandiamide, melamines, melam, ammonia, ammonium chloride urea or aniline. The antimony compound may be the oxide, sulphide or phosphate or an antimonite or antimonate. Optional additives are ammonium derivatives of polyphosphoric acid, inorganic phosphates or phosphites, organic phosphates, phosphites or phosphonates, phosphinates, phosphonium salts, polyphosphoryl amines and amides or phosphonitrile polymers, boric acid or barium or zinc borate. The flame retarding ingredients are preferably added before the phenolic resin binder. Examples use wood pulp mixed with powdered polyvinyl chloride, phenol-formaldehyde liquid resin and either a urea-formaldehyde resin optionally with a polyphosphate or antimony oxide with a polyphosphate. The moulding may be in the form of a flat sheet such as hardboard.
