abstract 1401585 Chewable smoking substitute LEO AB 15 Nov 1973 [16 Nov 1972] 53081/73 Heading A2B A chewable smoking substitute composition comprises 15-80 wt% of a gum base, nicotine, and sufficient of a solid physiologically acceptable .water-soluble buffering agent dispersed in the composition to raise the pH of the saliva above the normal when chewed. The buffer may be an alkali metal carbonate or phosphate. Also present may be an alkali metal bicarbonate. The nicotine may be present as the free base, or adsorbed on an adsorbent, or as a water-soluble salt, or as a complex with an insoluble cation-exchanger.
