titleOfInvention Formation of powdered samples
abstract 1401537 Impact pulverisers D C UDY 8 Aug 1972 [16 Aug 1971] 36913/72 Heading B2A Apparatus for grinding samples e.g. of grains seeds, comprises an impeller for causing the material to impinge at high velocity against an abrasive surface e.g. of tungsten carbide and then be swept through a screen to a cyclone separator. The process is assisted by subjecting material to an abrupt e.g. 120‹ change of direction in passage to the cyclone. Material enters a funnel on a removable cover 12 and passes under an adjustable gate 49 to an inlet 13 to drop onto the centre of an impeller 15. The cylindrical wall surrounding the impeller consists of an abrasive section 14a and a screen section 14b. Material passes through the screen to the cyclone separator 19 which incorporates a removable helical baffle 38. Air and any entrained non-separated material are fed by a pipe 19a back to the inlet 13. A spring-loaded seat 39 is provided for ready location of a sample-receiving container 21. The cyclonic effect may be augmented, if necessary, by suction applied to the air discharge outlet of the separator 19.
