abstract 1399162 6-Keto-#<SP>1,3,5(10)</SP>-steroids SCHERING AG 29 June 1972 30623/72 Heading C2U Steroids of the formula wherein R 1 is C 1-3 alkyl; R 2 is = O, or α-R 6 (#-COCH 2 R 5 ) in which R 3 is H or C 1-6 acyl, R 4 is H or a C 1-4 saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group and R 5 and R 6 are each H, OH or acyloxy; and R 7 is H, C 1-3 alkyl or acyl; and which may contain further nuclear substituents, of which those compounds wherein R 1 and R 7 are as defined and R 2 is in which R 3 is as defined and R 4 is a C 1-4 saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group and no further substituents are present and the compound 3,17-diacetoxy-19-nor-#<SP>1,3,5(10)</SP>- pregnatriene - 6,20 - diono are novel, are prepared by treating a steroid of the formula in a high boiling polar solvent with a basic agent in the presence of oxygen at 70-150‹ C. to give the required 3-ols which may subsequently be etherified or esterified. The novel steroids possess, for example, estrogenic activity, and they may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers.
