abstract | 1398740 Self sealing cable PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 57683/72 Heading H1A A self sealing cable, particularly a telecommunications cable comprises a sheath containing at least one conductor and a composite material which swells and evolves a gas when contacted by water. The composite material consists of a polymeric organic substance capable of forming a gel with water and at least two non-hygroscopic materials which react when in contact with water to produce a non- inflammable gas. The non-hygroscopic materials may be a water soluble non-hygroscopic solid acid and a salt of a different acid which has a volatile anhydride; e.g. the solid acid may be citric, oxalic, sulphamic, succinic, glutaric, maleic or benzoic acid and the salts may be carbonates, sulphites or nitrites. A preferred mixture is citric acid and calcium carbonate. The polymeric material may be a methoxycellulose or dextrin and comprises 20 to 80% and preferably 40 to 60% by weight of the composite material. |
