titleOfInvention Device for measuring the density of a liquid
abstract 1397170 Photo-electric measurement of density VDO ADOLF SCHINDLING AG 20 Sept 1973 [26 Sept 1972] 44272/73 Heading G1A The invention relates to the continuous measurement of density of e.g. acid in a motor vehicle accumulator using the refraction of light by the liquid. The deflection of the beam is preferably converted to an intensity variation by a wedge filter or a polarization filter mounted at (90 degrees-the Brewster angle) to the incident ray. As shown, the device is formed in transparent plastics as a battery-screw-plug with a rod dipping into the acid. A gallium arsenide diode 7 with conventional optics 10, 12, projects a parallel beam on to mirrored surface 19 so that it is reflected at an acute angle through face 21 into the acid, and thence approximately normal to face 24 on to mirror 27 and up to photo-electric sensor 16 behind wedge filter 17. Details:- The sensor may be photo-electric, a photo-diode, or photo-conductive device; the mirrors are preferably gold-plated with bitumen protection; the acute angle of incidence at face 21 approaches total internal reflection at the lowest density; a groove 26 clears gas bubbles from the path of the refracted ray; a temperature sensor (not shown) may be mounted in the plug.
