titleOfInvention | Process for production of polyarylenes |
abstract | 1396580 Polyarylenes STANDARD OIL CO 24 Aug 1972 39449/72 Heading C5E [Also in Division C3] Polyarylenes are obtained by the dehydrogenative coupling of partially hydrogenated aromatic compounds in the presence of a catalyst at temperatures above 750‹ F. and at pressures above 600 p.s.i.g., in the presence of hydrogen. The partially hydrogenated aromatic compounds may be the starting materials or they may have been obtained in a preliminary reaction by contacting aromatic compounds with a catalyst at temperatures of at least 400‹ F. and at pressures of at least 500 p.s.i.g. in hydrogen. Instead of the partial hydrogenation and dehydrogenative coupling being carried out as two separate steps they can be combined in one process in which the two reactions occur simultaneously. In examples polymers are obtained from biphenyl, mixtures of biphenyl and phenylcyclohexane, naphthalene, benzene, a mixture of toluene and phenylcyclohexane, and mixtures of biphenyl and hydrobiphenyl; the catalysts are one or more of the oxides of calcium, cobalt, molybdenum and sodium on alumina, on silica and on silicaalumina mixtures, a mixture of sodium hydride and cobalt oxide on alumina, sodium hydroxide on magnesium silicate, alumina, and active carbon alone and impregnated with potassium hydroxide. |
