titleOfInvention Pressure sensitive adhesive products
abstract 1393982 Laminating with adhesives ROHM & HAAS CO 11 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 6566/72 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] An adhesive product, suitable for bonding various substrates, comprises a backing-free layer or film of pressure sensitive adhesive, optionally on a release coated surface, the adhesive having the resilience of a soft rubber, a thickness of 8-125 mils., a Tg of below 0‹ C., a tensile strength of from 15-60 p.s.i., and a per cent elongation at break of from 500- 3000%. The adhesive is preferably an addition polymer derived from acrylic monomers and the physical properties defined above are suitably obtained by forming a cross-linked polymer and/or incorporating a finely divided inorganic bodying agent in the polymer. Materials which can be bonded with the adhesive include wood, laminated decorative sheets, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon, phenolformaldehyde resins, urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, linoleum, asphalt tile, vinyl tile, ceramic tile, glass, concrete, asbestos cement, plaster, metals and coated surfaces such as painted automobile bodies, woodwork, walls, ceilings and floors. Useful bodying agents for use in the invention include finely divided inorganic materials such as carbon black, zinc oxide, calcium carbonate, calcium silicate, hydrated silica, hydrated alumina, clays and magnesium carbonate. In Examples the adhesive comprises copolymers of various monomers selected from n- or iso-butylacrylate, methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, maleic acid monoester of 2-tbutylaminoethanol, ethyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, octyl acrylate, N-methylolacrylamide; and a mixture of butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer with an epoxy resin derived from 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane and epichlorohydrin, and a mixture of polyvinyl ether, 2 - ethylhexylacrylate / methacrylic acid/ glycidyl methacrylate / methyl acrylate copolymer, poly(2 - ethylhexyl acrylate) and phenol-formaldehyde resin.
