abstract | 1392413 Polymerisation catalyst NAPHTACHIMIE 24 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 25023/73 Heading B1E [Also in Division C3] An olefin polymerisation catalyst is prepared by reacting magnesium, one or more mono-halogenated hydrocarbons and a halogen and/or organic derivative of a transition metal of sub-group IVa, Va or VIa of the Periodic Table in a state of valency of at least four to produce a solid compound of magnesium and of the transition metal containing the transition metal in a lower state of valency than in the original derivative, and bringing the solid compound into contact with an oxidising agent to increase the valency of the transition metal. The transition metals comprise titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. In the Examples the catalysts are prepared by reacting powdered magnesium, titanium tetrachloride, n-butyl chloride, n-propyl titanate and vanaduim tetrachloride in the presence of iodine and nheptane and oxidising the solid compound in suspension in n-heptane with air, oxygen, iodine and chlorine. The compound may be subjected to physical treatment during or after oxidation e.g. crushing or elutriation e.g. granulometric selection by an air stream. |
