titleOfInvention Telephone dial illuminating units
abstract 1391925 Uses of Luminescence STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 15 Aug 1972 13730/74 Divided out of 1391924 Heading C4S [Also in Division H4] Illumination of a telephone dial is provided by an annular or part-annular member 9 (Fig. 7) of plastics material formed with a trough which, in use, is behind the number plate 2 of the telephone instrument. One or more light sources 45 are located in the trough. A diffuser plate 48 closes the trough. The inner surfaces of the trough have reflecting surfaces formed by two curves which meet to define a central ridge and the one or more light sources 45 are supported by the ridge. The curvatures of the surfaces are such as to maximize light output. The light source is at or near the optical centres. The trough has clip members 51 which engage clips 28 on the telephone instrument face plate 6. The number plate 2 has clip members 27a which engage clips 52 on the trough. The light source 45 preferably comprises a glass tube bent into a C-shape and containing a phosphor excited to luminescence by radiation from a filling of tritium gas. The tube is held by pairs of clips (46) Fig. 4 (not shown) raised from the plastics material or by more substantial blocks (47) Fig. 5 (not shown) and is ultrasonically welded into position. A silicone rubber tube may cover the light tube. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,023,595.
