titleOfInvention Catalytic components for the polymerisation of alpha-olefins
abstract 1391067 Catalyst components for olefin polymerization SOLVAY & CIE 23 March 1972 [23 March 1971 17 Aug 1971 8 Oct 1971] 13660/72 Heading C3P A solid particulate catalytic complex for the stereospecific polymerization of α-olefins having 2 to 18 carbon atoms comprises a major proportion of TiCl 3 and is in the form of generally spherical particles constituted by agglomerates. of microparticles having a cellular structure such that the total specific surface area of the complex is greater than 75 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm. and the total pore volume of said spheroidal particles is greater than 0À15 cc./gm. Preferably the apparent density of the complex exceeds 0À6 kg./dm<SP>3</SP> and the diameter of the agglomerates is between 5 and 100 microns. The complex may have the formula T 1 Cl 3 (AlR n X 3-n ) x C y where R is a C 1 -C 18 hydrocarbon radical, X is halogen, n is 0 to 2, x is less than 0À30, y is greater than 0À001 and C is a complexing agent capable of forming a complex with the titanium halide and the aluminium halide or organohalide. The complexing agent may be an ether, thioether or thiol. The complex is used in conjunction with an organocompound of a metal of Group I(a), II(a) or III(b) of the Mendeleef Periodic Table to polymerize olefins. In the examples TiCl 4 is reduced with AlEt 2 Cl and heated, treated with diisoamylether, di-n-butyl ether or di-n-butyl sulphide in hexane or isodecane and reacted with TiCl 4 to produce the catalytic complex which is used with AlEt 2 Cl to polymerize propylene, ethylene or n-butene-1 in hexane in the presence of hydrogen, to prepare block copolymers of ethylene and propylene and to continuously or bulk polymerize propylene. In comparative examples TiCl 4 reduced with H 2 , Al or AlEt 2 Cl or the latter reacted with TiCl 4 are used in place of the catalytic complex or the diisoamylether is added to the polymerization medium.
