titleOfInvention Binders for the electrostatic powder-spraying process
abstract 1390712 Curable epoxy group-containing polymer compositions BAYER AG 25 May 1973 [27 May 1972] 25069/73 Heading C3B A curable binder for use in electrostatic powder spraying comprises a mixture of (1) a copolymer of (a) 20-60 wt. per cent of styrene, alphamethyl styrene, o-chlorostyrene, p-chlorostyrene and/or p-tert.-butyl styrene; (b) 25- 65 wt. per cent of an alkyl acrylate and/or a C 2 or more alkyl methacrylate; (c) 0-35 wt. per cent of methyl methacrylate and (d) 3-20 wt. per cent of glycidyl acrylate and/or methacrylate; (2) a polycarboxylic acid and/or a polycarboxylic acid anhydride and (3) a blocked polyisocyanate. The mixture preferably comprises 40-98 parts by wt. of (1), and 1-20 parts by wt. of each of (2) and (3). The average molecular weight of polymer (1) is preferably 3000 to 20,000. The components of the mixture may be mixed together at 80-120‹ C. The blocked polyisocyanate preferably deblocks at 130-200‹ C In the examples copolymers of (A) styrene, methyl methacrylate butyl acrylate and glycidyl methacrylate, or (B) styrene, methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate and glycidyl methacrylate are each mixed with (1) adipic acid and hexamethylene diisocyanate blocked with epsilon caprolactam, with benzyl dimethylamine as curing catalyst and (2), as in (1) but using a prepolymer of diethylene glyol and 1-isocyanato- 3,3,5-trimethyl-5-isocyanate methyl cyclohexane containing epsilon caprolactam-blocked isocyanate groups. The mixtures are cured by baking. Many other polycarboxylic acids and anhydrides, and blocked polyisocyanates are listed.
