titleOfInvention Surgical dressing its manufacture and use
abstract 1390044 Surgical dressings BAWAG AG 3 May 1972 [5 May 1971] 20691/72 Heading ASR [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] A surgical dressing comprises an elastic woven or knitted fabric provided with a film of polyvinylpyrrolidone which has holes therein, so that bleeding is stopped by the styptic effect of the polyvinylpyrrolidone, whilst at the same time air can reach the wound. To prevent infection the dressing is treated with an antimicrobic compound which is cation-active in order that it may add on to the polyamide fibres from which the dressing is knitted or woven. The polyvinylpyrrolidone film is sprayed on to the fabric of the dressing, and then ruptured by stretching the fabric, the fabric being made from crimped multifilament yarn e.g. polyamide. The antimicrobial compound may be a benzalkyl ammonium derivative, a phenolic polyoxymethylene derivative, or an aryl alkyl ammonium chloride. The dressing may be attached to the area around a wound by a solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone in ethanol, and may be formed as a laminate of several layers of fabric.
