abstract 1389621 Hydroxyalkane sulphonic acid salts BAYER AG 18 May 1973 [18 May 1972] 23778/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Novel compounds of formula where X is NH 4 or an alkali metal are prepared by reacting 2-methylene-propane-1,3-diol with XHSO 3 in an aqueous medium at up to 100‹ C. and at pH 3-9 in the presence of catalytically active oxygen using a molar ratio of bisulphite to diol of between 1 : 1 and 5 : 1. The oxygen may be pure oxygen from air or a compound evolving oxygen, e.g. H 2 O 2 . The pH may be controlled by adding dilute acid or introducing SO 2 .
