titleOfInvention Self-adhesive disposable surgical drape
abstract 1386800 Laminates JOHNSON & JOHNSON 25 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49911/71 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B2 and A5] A self-adhesive disposable surgical drape having a fenestration therein comprises a sheet of bacteria- and liquid-impervious material, the upper surface of the sheet having secured thereto, at least around the fenestration, a layer of absorbent material, and the lower surface of the sheet having, at least on the marginal portion of the sheet surrounding the fenestration, a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive. The sheet of bacteria- and liquid-impervious material may be a polypropylene, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride film or an adhesive-bonded wet-laid non-woven fabric formed from nylon and cellulosic fibres which has been rendered waterrepellent, and the absorbent material may be a non-woven fabric containing surface-active agents, a woven fabric or paper. The absorbent layer, which may be additionally coated on its under surface with a liquid- and bacteria-impervious plastics film, may be secured to the sheet of liquid- and bacteria-impervious material by means of an adhesive. The layer of absorbent material may or may not be co-extensive with the sheet provided it wholly surrounds the fenestration. The pressure sensitive adhesive which may be a polyacrylate, polymethacrylate or copolymer of 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate and vinyl acetate, may be covered with a releasable cover sheet, e.g. of silicone- or waxcoated paper. The drape may be sterilized by means of steam or gamma irradiation and contained in a hermetically sealed enclosure.
