titleOfInvention Preparation of alkyl tetralins
abstract 1385414 Alkyl tetralins TEIJIN Ltd 30 Aug 1972 [31 Aug 1971] 40258/72 Heading C5E Alkyl tetralins are prepared by isomerizing an alkenyl benzene of the formula wherein R is H, Me, or Et, R<SP>1</SP> is H or Me and R<SP>2</SP> is -CH=CH-CH 3 , -CH 2 -CH=CH 2 , or -CH 2 -CH=CH-CH 3 by heating at 180- 350‹ C. in the presence, as catalyst, of phosphoric acid supported on a siliceous absorbent, such as diatomaceous earth, bentonite, silica, acid clays or montmorillonite. Catalyst promotors may be present such as the oxides and phosphates of Ni or Cu, ammonium phosphate, ammonium sulphate, alkali metal phosphates or sulphates and aluminium sulphate. The reaction may be effected in the liquid or gaseous phase, optionally in the presence of a carrier gas. Many examples are given of the preparation of tetralins containing methyl and ethyl substituents in various positions.
