titleOfInvention Transmission line section
abstract 1385258 Two-part couplings GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 13 Oct 1972 [21 Oct 1971] 47385/72 Heading H2E [Also in Division H1] A section of transmission line for insertion between a source of signals and a load consists of a generally cylindrical outer conductor, an inner conductor disposed within it and a voltage surge suppression element consisting of a member of metal oxide based varistor material having an α > 10 in the current density range 10<SP>-3</SP> to 10<SP>2</SP> amps/cm<SP>2</SP>. and having outer and inner peripheral portions respectively contacting the outer and inner conductors. In the typical arrangement shown in Fig. 2 the toroidal varistor member 40, made of one of the zinc oxide based materials described in Canadian Specification 831,691 has metallized surfaces 31, 32 prepared, e.g. by application of silver-glass frit by silk screening and firing at 550‹ C. To reduce shunt capacitance and hence improve the impedance-frequency response the metallized surfaces may alternatively consist of concentric annuli on one face of the toroidal member abutting shoulders on the inner and outer conductors respectively and if smaller surge currents are anticipated a thinner member epoxy bonded to an alumina support may be used. The tendency for surge current to concentrate in one part of the member due to inaccurate placement of the metallization can be reduced by providing the inner annulus with flat ended radial projections and providing parallel flats on the inner edge of the outer annulus. Two (or more) inner conductors each surrounded by a toroid of varistor material may be provided as shown in Fig. 11.
