titleOfInvention | Method of preparing polyoxyalkylene glycols and their monoethers |
abstract | 1384957 Polyglycol ethers PECHINEY UGINE KUHLMANN 23 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 13638/72 Heading C3R Compounds of the formula wherein X denotes H, C 1-3 alkyl or benzyl, n is an integer of from 1 to 200 and R denotes H or an organic radical, are prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide with a hydroxyl compound ROH in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, the concentration in the reactive medium of hydroxyl function other than that supplied by catalyst being maintained substantially equal to that of the required product throughout the whole of the reaction. In examples the hydroxyl concentration is maintained by conducting the reaction in a medium consisting of the required final product obtained by conventional techniques. ROH may represent an alcohol, alcohol ether or polyether, di-N-alkyl or aryl monoalkylolamine, thioetheralcohol, or phenol. Examples describe the reaction of propylene oxide with methanol, butanol, octanol, a C 16 primary alcohol, triethylene glycol, glycerine and nonylphenol; the reaction of ethylene oxide with ethylene glycol, and the reaction of mixtures of methylene oxide and propylene. oxide with butanol and diethylene glycol. |
