titleOfInvention Daylight fluorescent pigments
abstract 1384821 Fluorescent pigments HOECHST AG 21 Jan 1972 [22 Jan 1971 2 Feb 1971] 2946/72 Headings C3R and C3P A daylight fluorescent pigment suitable for use in colouring lacquers, printing inks, paints, plastics, paper, caoutchaic and textiles, is produced by dissolving or dispersing in an organic diluent containing no active hydrogen atoms (a) an organic fluorescent dyestuff, and dissolving in the diluent (b) a polyester containing hydroxyl groups, or a copolymer of an olefinically unsaturated compound containing hydroxyl groups and an olefinically unsaturated compound not containing hydroxyl groups and (c) a cross-linking agent for the-polymer, subsequently curing the mixture and grinding the cured product. The polyester may have a hydroxyl number of 200-600 and a molecular weight of 300-3000 and the copolymer may have a molecular weight of 10,000-80,000. The cross-linking agent (c) may be an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic di- or polyisocyanate or a cyclic di- or tetra-carboxylic acid anhydride, the fluorescent dyestuff (a) may be a rhodamine, sulphorhodamine, naphthalimide, benzoxanthene or thiobenzoxanthene dyestuff and the organic diluent may be a glycol monoalkyl ether ester, dimethyl formamide, dimethylsulphoxide or dioxane. In a modification of the process the fluorescent dyestuff (a) is used in a form chemically bound to the crosslinking agent (c). In examples pigments which may be used in polyvinyl chloride compositions or in lacquers containing alkyd and melamine resins, are produced using a copolymer produced from methyl- or n-butyl methacrylate and #-hydroxyethyl or #-hydroxypropyl methacrylate optionally in admixture with styrene or vinyl acetate or a polyester produced by the reaction of dimethyl terephthalate with 1,1,1- trimethylol propane, and as cross-linking agent a polyisocyanate containing biuret groups prepared by the reaction of hexamethylene-1,6- diisocyanate with water, a reaction product of hexamethylene - 1,6 - diisocyanate with trimethylol propane, phthalic acid anhydride or tetrahydrophthalic acid anhydride.
