abstract 1383908 Olefin oligomerisation catalysts BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 24 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 7901/72 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] Catalysts for use in the oligomerisation of conjugated di-olefins comprises (a) phosphorus-containing polymer having metal selected from cobalt, nickel and palladium bonded to the phosphorus atoms thereof and (b) an aluminium compound having the formula AlX 3 wherein each X, which may be the same or different, is a halogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or aryloxy group. The phosphoruscontaining polymer, which may have been prepared by a method disclosed in Specification No. 1277736, 1287566, 1291237, 1295673 or 1312611, may be (i) a phosphorus-containing polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride or (ii) a polymer prepared from an unsaturated phosphoruscontaining polymer or (iii) a polymer prepared from a polymeric alcohol and a trivalent phosphorus compound or (iv) a polymer prepared from a polymer containing double bonds and a compound containing a P-H bond; the metal may have been bonded to the polymer by a method disclosed in Specification 1277737 or 1295673, for example by reacting a phosphorus-containing polystyrene with (i) nickel acetylacetonate in the presence of diethylaluminium ethoxide and butadiene or (ii) nickel bis (cyclo-octadiene) in the presence of butadiene or (iii) 1, 5, 9-cyclododecatriene nickel (0). A nickel-containing polymer may have a diene ligand, for example a cyclo-octadiene ligand, bonded to the nickel. The aluminium compound preferably has the formula R n Al(OR) 3-n wherein n is 1, 2 or 3 and each R is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Exemplified catalysts comprise (a) nickel-containing polymer prepared from phosphorus-containing cross-linked polystyrene and either nickel acetylacetone in the presence of diethylaluminium ethoxide and butadiene (Examples 2 and 3) or bis (1, 5-cyclo-octadiene) nickel (0) in the presence of butadiene (Examples 5 to 11 and 13) and (b) diethylaluminium ethoxide.
