abstract 1383522 2-Methyl-6-chloropyridine derivatives and salts thereof BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM GmbH 27 Jan 1972 [27 Jan 1971 15 Dee 1971] 3900/72 Heading C2C Novel 2-methyl-6-chloropyridine derivatives and salts thereof having the general formula wherein A is a hydrogen atom, an inorganic or organic cation, or a radical of the formula -R, -COR, -COOR, -CH 2 COR or -CH 2 COOR wherein R is a hydrogen atom, an optionally chloro-, hydroxy, cyano, dimethylamino or phenyl-substituted (C 1 -C 17 )alkyl or alkenyl group, a (C 3 -C 6 )cycloalkyl group, or a phenyl, chlorophenyl, nitrophenyl, pyridyl or tetrahydrofurfuryl group; n is 1, with the proviso that when A is an inorganic or organic cation then n is the charge on the cation; X is chlorine, bromine or iodine and Y is oxygen or sulphur, are prepared either by (i) halogenating a compound of the formula in order to obtain a product wherein Y is oxygen and A is hydrogen-; (ii) hydroxylating a compound of the formula wherein X<SP>1</SP> is chlorine or bromine, in order to obtain a product wherein Y is oxygen, A is hydrogen and X is chlorine or bromine; (iii) reacting a compound of the formula with phsophorus pentasulphide in order to obtain a product wherein Y is sulphur, and A is hydrogen; (iv) reacting a compound of the Formula III above with an alkali metal hydrogen sulphide in order to obtain a product wherein Y is sulphur and A is hydrogen; or (v) reacting a compound of the formula with a compound of formula Z-R, Z-COOR, Z-COR, Z-CH 2 COR or Z-CH 2 COOR with the proviso that R may not be hydrogen in the compound of formula Z-R, and Z is an atom or group removable as an anion, in order to obtain a product wherein A is other than hydrogen. The novel compounds possess pesticidal and biocidal properties.
