titleOfInvention Process for the hydrogenation of aromatic hydrocarbons
abstract 1382667 Hydrogenating aromatic hydrocarbons SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 22 March 1972 13374/72 Heading C5E Aromatic hydrocarbons are hydrogenated over a supported catalyst comprising (a) nickel sulphide and/or cobalt sulphide, (b) molybdenum sulphide and/or tungsten sulphide and (c) fluorine. Substantially all the fluorine is incorporated by in situ fluoriding i.e. addition of fluorine compound (e.g. orthofluorotoluene and difluoromethane) to the gas and/or liquid stream passing over the catalyst. Nitrogen may be incorporated into the catalyst by addition to the stream of a nitrogen compound (many listed). A small amount of fluorine compound may be continuously added to the feed after the catalyst has reached its required fluorine content. The catalyst may comprise 0À025 to 0À5 g. atoms of Ni and/or Co and from 0À02 to 0À3 g. atoms of Mo and/or W per 100 g. carrier (e.g. SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , MgO, B 2 O 3 , Th 2 O 3 ). Crude benzene and petroleum distillates (final b.p.=375‹ C.) may be hydrogenated, the latter after hydrogenation being suitable for use as aromaticsfree solvents, illuminating oils, jet fuels and diesel fuels.
