titleOfInvention Compositions for dressing leather and artificial leather
abstract 1382440 Coating leather or artificial leather BAYER AG 8 Nov 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 51430/ 72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A composition for dressing leather (e.g. tanned cow-hide or calf-grain leather) and artificial leathers comprises (1) a polyurethane or polyurea with a molecular weight of 1000- 200,000 which is the polyaddition product of an organic polyisocyanate and at least one organic compound containing at least two terminal hydroxyl groups and/or amino groups which has a molecular weight of 500-20,000 (2) nitrocellulose, and (3) a urea derivative containing at least one C 8-20 aliphatic hydrocarbon group and at least one urea group. The preferred amounts of the above components are 8-95% wt of the polyaddition product, 3-90% wt of nitrocellulose and 0.5-25% wt of the urea derivative, based on the total weight of the 3 components. The nitrocellulose is preferably either an ester soluble commercial nitrocellulose or an alcoholic nitrocellulose solution. Many urea derivatives are mentioned. Urea derivatives exemplified are N-cetyl-N', N'- dibutyl urea and N-stearyl-N', N'-'bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) urea. Optional ingredients include a chain lengthening agent; an inert organic solvent; oatalysts e.g. tertiary amines or Pb or Sn compounds; fillers which improve the gloss e.g. silicic acid, aluminium silicate, talcum, kieselgur and the metal salts of fatty acids. The compositions may be applied to the leather or artificial leather by means of an air-spray gun, air-less spray gun, casting apparatus, roller applicator or wiper applicator, or by the reversal process. In example 1 a primed-aniline-dyed chrome tanned cow hide or calf grain leather is dressed with the following composition:-66 pbw of a 30% wt ethyl acetate solution of a polyurethane prepared by reacting an adipic acid/diethylene glycol polyester and tolylene diisocyanate; 75 pbw of a 10% wt butyl acetate solution of a nitrocellulose; 50 pbw of a 10% wt ethyl acetate solution of an N-cetyl-N', N'-dibutyl urea; 20 pbw of a 60% wt butyl acetate solution of a polyadduct prepared from hexamethylene diisocyanate and tolylene diisocyanate; and- 789 pbw of a 1:1 mixture of ethyl acetate and ethyl glycol acetate.
