abstract 1382123 Catalytic polymerization of episulphides and other monomers SNAM PROGETTI SpA 18 May 1972 [24 May 1971] 23533/72 Heading C3R Addition polymerization of monomers such as ethylene sulphide, propylene sulphide, cyclohexene sulphide, isobutene sulphide, allyloxy- (2,3)-epithiopropane, buta-1,3-diene monoepisulphide, 1,2-epithio-4-vinyl-cyclohexene, styrene, acrylonitrile. beta-propiolactone, acetaldehyde, methylvinylketone, dimethylketene and lactams is carried outin a polar solvent medium in the presence of an alkali metal halide catalyst. Polar solvents include hexalkylphosphoramides, dialkylsulphoxides, ethers, N,N-dialkylformamides and -acetamides pyridine, acetonitrile, dioxane, morpholine, and formylmorpholine. Examples describe the polymerization of propylene sulphide, mixtures of ethylenesulphide and propylene sulphide and mixtures of ethylene sulphide, propylene sulphide and 1-allyloxy-2,3-epithiopropaneusing LiI, LiCl and NaCl catalysts. Uses.-As elastomers, seals, adhesives, lacquers and latexes.
