1380108 Epoxy resin emulsions UNISEARCH Ltd 6 March 1972 [19 March 1971 15 Oct 1971] 10363/72 Heading C3B A stable aqueous emulsion of an epoxy resin contains as emulsifying agent an ethyleneoxide/propylene-oxide block copolymer of formula or where X is 8-22, Y is 25-40, and R is alkenyl, alkaryl, cycloalkenyl, aralkenyl, or cycloalkyl. R may be a C 3-18 alkylphenyl radical, e.g. octyl-, nonyl-, or decyl-phenyl. The epoxy resin may be of the optionally brominated bisphenol A type, an epoxy novolac, or cycloaliphatic, resin. The emulsion may also contain a curing agent or hardener, which may be dissolved in water or dispersed in an emulsion of a thermoplastic polymer, followed by blending with the epoxy resin emulsion. The curing agent may be a polyamide, urea-formaldehyde, or melamine formaldehyde, and/or an aromatic amine and/or adduct thereof. The thermoplastic polymer may be a vinyl or acrylic homo- or co-polymer, or mixtures thereof. The epoxy resin emulsion may contain fibres of carbon, ceramic, or glass. Other optional ingredients are butyl triglycol ether, Fe 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , barytes, whiting, stearatecoated CaCO 3 , or acetic acid. The product may be a water-filled foam. Uses.-Coatings, laminĀµ, castings, surgical implants and prostheses, light-weight corrosion resistant materials, printed-circuit boards, and adhesives, e.g. for old-to-new concrete. |
