1379562 Aluminium phosphate coatings IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Oct 1972 [19 Oct 1971] 11866/74 Divided out of 1379561 Heading B2E [Also in Division Cl] Coatings are obtained on glass, carbon, ceramic, organic polymers, organic plastic films, and thermoplastic articles by applying a composition comprising a complex phosphate of aluminium containing at least one chemically bound molecule of an organic hydroxy compound ROH (e.g. an alcohol comprising 1-4 carbon atoms) wherein R is an organic group and anions of a carboxylic acid or a strong mineral acid (e.g. nitric acid, perchloric acid, acetic acid or benzoic acid) other than a hydrogen halide or oxyphosphorus acid wherein the ratio of aluminium ions to phosphate ions is in the range 1:0.8 to 1:1.3. Solutions of the complex phosphate may additionally comprise organic polymers and monomers (numerous examples are given), pigments, colorants, surfactants, plasticisers, heat and U.V. stabilizers, swelling agents for polymeric materials, fillers, materials which control the chemical and physical properties of the aluminium phosphate produced from the complex phosphate, e.g. boric acid ester or ether, silicic acid ester or ether, titanate esters, antimony salts, ruthenium salts, silicides and tellurides, refractory materials (e.g. silica, alumina, titania or carbon). The complex phosphate or solution thereof may be decomposed by heating at 60C to 500C. It may also be used as a coating on mould surfaces and in the production of glass laminates, as an anchor coating to enhance the printability of organic plastic films and sheets, as a priming coat on metal surfaces, as a coating, as an overcoat above conventional coatings, as a coating on bottles and packaging materials to improve their gas barrier properties, to impregnate cellulosic substrates, as an anti-misting coating on thermoplastic sheets and when mixed with a dispersion of fluorocarbon polymer as a non- stick coating. Polymers may be present; of which many are listed. |
